Durham Roadway Sign Improvement Audit II - Progress Portal

The Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau, City, County, Downtown Durham Inc., Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, Regional Transportation Alliance, and N.C. Department of Transportation work together to identify and correct places within or leading to Durham (City or County) where roadway signage is misleading or unclear.

Reports from Durham residents, workers, and visitors are tracked below on this progress portal, with each case logged and vetted, then tackled by City or State transportation officials accordingly. To report a new example of inaccurate Durham roadway signage, submit an online survey to the task force.

Main &Broad/Swift
OPEN
4/30/2007
Description: There should be an overhead sign with an arrow for both Broad and Swift instead of just Broad. Also the overhead signs could be larger with bigger type so they're easier to read. You cannot even see the Swift sign on the corner sign post at all. This problem is repeated at Ninth/Erwin & Main as well as at ALL intersections where the street name changes. Other NC cities do both street names with arrows. Durham should follow suit.

Club Boulevard ramp (exit 179) exiting Interstate 85 South
OPEN
12/29/2006
Description: A sign directs motorists to turn left off the ramp to access US 70, with an accompanying green directional sign directing motorists to follow this route to Raleigh and Research Triangle Park. With the new exit 178 ramp providing direct access to US 70 East from I-85 South (Northbound I-85 has always had this access), this sign is no longer needed and is, in fact, confusing.

Lakeshore Drive in Woodlake Community
OPEN
9/5/2006
Description: Presently, there are 2 stop signs on Lakeshore drive, but they do not reflect a 3-way stop-and they are not good at making people stop at the intersection. Can we have REAL posts and LARGER stop signs place on Lakeshore---PLEASE!!! Or ask the cops to ticket people?
7/13/2006
US 70 By-Pass East, before NC 98 interchange
OPEN
7/13/2006
Description: New sign bridge, within the city limits, points to NC 98 as going "to Durham"
7/13/2006
Interstate 85 South on the Falls Lake Causeway
OPEN
7/13/2006
Description: Big sign with the mileage to Durham, in Durham.
7/13/2006
Interstate 85 South just before new US 70 By-Pass East exit
OPEN
7/13/2006
Description: The sign for Exit 177 still refers to Exits 177-A and 177-B, although the referenced exit is now just Exit 177 after being reconfigured in the recent highway upgrades
5/15/2006
entrance ramp from 501 bypass at Durham onto Rt 85
OPEN
5/26/2006
Description: The sign says that the next exit going west (Costco warehouse, Home Depot) is closed and to continue on to the exit after that but once you get to the next ramp, there is nothing to direct you to the shopping area. We eneded up getting back on 85 going east and getting off there but trying to turn onto the entrance ramp for 85 east was difficult due to the heavy rains and traffic.
5/12/2006
I-85/US 15 North Exit off of US 70 West
OPEN
5/26/2006
Description: The number for the I-85/US 15 North exit off of US 70 West is wrong. The current number is 285. The previous exit for Cheek Road is numbered 284. Since mileposts along US 70 decrease from east to west the I-85 exit should be 283.
4/1/2006
85 North
OPEN
4/21/2006
Description: Right near the Alston and Lee [Street]. intersection is a detour sign to 85 North. As you follow the detour, there are signs pointing to 85 all the way until the actual ramp to get onto 85. (near Cheek Rd.) The problem has existed for quite some time. Very confusing. Is the detour still necessary?
2/21/2006
US 15/501 and I-40
OPEN
3/7/2006
Description: These signs need to be overhead for visibility ahead of time because of very heavy traffic and numerous lanes. People constantly switch 2 & 3 lanes at a time because of last minute visibility for north and southbound signs to enter onto I-40.
2/21/2006
Fayetteville Road
OPEN
2/21/2006
Description: We all know that [The Streets at] Southpoint is on Fayetteville Road but the sign at 54 says Fayetteville Street, not Road. Down further at Woodcroft Parkway, they have put up a new sign that says, "Fayetteville Road", but at Martin Luther King Parkway it still says "Fayetteville St." instead of Road.
